This event aimed to strengthen media engagement in advocating for safe, inclusive educational environments in Cox’s Bazar.
The meeting began with a welcome speech from the Team Leader of the LREP Program who highlighted the critical role of media in driving social awareness and community action in education.
The Project Manager presented the program and called on media personnel to support GESI-focused initiatives by covering the successes and challenges faced in building gender-sensitive, inclusive schools.
A PowerPoint presentation by a Research Associate offered insights into RDRS Bangladesh’s brief, ongoing GESI initiatives, recent research on local school environments, and how media can help address GESI-related challenges. The presentation underscored the transformative impact media can have by spotlighting stories of gender equity, social inclusion, and educational improvement.
Guest Reflections:
The President of the Press Club, Cox’s Bazar, addressed the audience on the media’s responsibility to represent diverse voices. He urged reporters to highlight stories on gender-sensitive educational practices and encourage teachers, parents, and communities to get involved in creating inclusive school environments.
The Press Club Secretary echoed this message, advocating for a proactive media stance to hold stakeholders accountable for creating safe and inclusive learning spaces. He also stressed the need to push for increased national budget allocations to support educational development.
The District Education Officer shared his belief that change must start from within the home, with families practicing gender equality and equitable treatment. He encouraged reporters to write stories that promote family equity and inspire a shift in societal perspective, emphasizing that media has the power to motivate change in family and community attitudes toward gender and inclusion.
The Primary Education Officer reiterated the need for media support in raising awareness of GESI issues in schools and strengthening community involvement in school development initiatives. Both education officers urged the media to focus on advocacy for essential infrastructure improvements and the implementation of safety measures in schools.
Stakeholder Contributions:
- Media Representatives: Some reporters suggested offering family counseling sessions, publishing articles on gender equality in newspapers and online media, and organizing seminars to build public awareness. They also emphasized the importance of motivating women and girls and the media’s role in advocating for gender equity through consistent coverage.
- Press Club Members: Discussed the potential for media to challenge state and social discrimination and advocate against harmful practices such as child marriage and gender-based violence. They also highlighted the need to encourage female empowerment, with specific emphasis on creating opportunities for girls to pursue education and careers.
Reporter Observations:
Several reporters offered additional insights, suggesting that media can play a role in family counseling, publishing articles to raise awareness of gender equality, and organizing seminars to address these issues. They also recommended that media narratives should challenge state and social discrimination, advocate for the elimination of violence against women, promote empowerment for working women, support the end of child marriage, and encourage religious and community leaders to participate actively in raising awareness.
