KATHMANDU, NEPAL, JUNE 26th, 2025<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (LIKE) Lab organized a research seminar on\u00a0\u201cImpact of School-Based Mental Health Program (SEL) on Selected Middle School Students in Kathmandu Valley\u201d<\/em>. The session explored the integration of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into school curricula and its role in fostering students\u2019 emotional intelligence and responsible decision-making.<\/p>\n

Facilitated by\u00a0Mr. Saurav Rajbhandari<\/strong>, the seminar featured a presentation by\u00a0Ms. Shrima Chudal<\/strong>\u00a0of Sambhavya Foundation, who shared insights from their SEL program designed for middle school students in Nepal.<\/p>\n

Key Highlights of the Presentation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  • The SEL initiative integrates Social Emotional Learning, Digital Citizenship, and Sexual Reproductive Health into the middle school curriculum to promote emotional intelligence, communication, and responsible behavior.<\/li>\n
  • The research aimed to evaluate the SEL program\u2019s impact on emotional and social competencies and assess students\u2019 ability to manage emotions and build healthy relationships.<\/li>\n
  • Pre-test\/post-test intervention was conducted over one academic year with 735 students (Grades 6\u20137, ages 11\u201314).<\/li>\n
  • Tools like SELS-12 Likert scale were employed in the study. It was further analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman\u2019s rho for validity.<\/li>\n
  • The study found that overall SEL scores improved from\u00a0M = 40.38<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0M = 42.43<\/em>. The findings indicated moderate gains in support seeking, responsibility, and positivity. Along with that stability across competencies increased, showing consistent student responses post-intervention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Reflections and Discussion<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During the discussion, participants highlighted:<\/p>\n

    • The need for experiential learning activities to deepen emotion recognition skills.<\/li>\n
    • Importance of a 6-month follow-up assessment to measure sustained impact.<\/li>\n
    • Recommendations to scale the SEL model to additional schools and ensure contextual relevance for Nepal\u2019s education system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      The seminar concluded with the need to refine the program for areas such as adaptability and emotional recognition.
